THE CHALLENGE

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has over 50% of Africa’s water reserves, yet 33 million people in the DRC lack access to clean quality water. Despite sustained efforts, only 52% of the population has access to an improved water source and only 29% of the population has access to improved sanitation facilities. The lack of readily available clean water in the DRC leaves millions without adequate sanitation and hygiene, vulnerable to water-borne diseases, and at risk of malnutrition.

THE SOLUTION

To address the challenges of lack of clean water, Provide Hope in Action’s Vitale Energie project aimed to establish strong and symbiotic partnerships to support equitable and accessible water and electricity service models using renewable energy. They developed Consumer Stock Ownership Plans (CPSOs) which do not require consumers to pay upfront costs but rather allow them to become shareholders in future revenue generated. As this model had never been attempted in a conflict zone, CHIC funding was leveraged to restore power at the Rwanguba Reference Hospital and provide 24-hour electricity at the site using a CPSO finance scheme. With the electricity provided, all of the machines and medical devices were rendered functional again. Improved healthcare services resulted in a measured decrease in mortality rate amongst women and children alongside a reduction in waterborne diseases. Training was also provided to healthcare staff and nurses relating to hygiene and neonatal services. In addition, a 36KVA solar system and a 10,000-liter purification machine were installed, and the community of Rwanguba was trained in business management with the hope that local entrepreneurs could apply new business management techniques after having gained access to a more consistent energy and water source.
